The Basics of Boat Ramp Etiquette

Boat Ramp Etiquette – One of the most stressful parts of boating can be the launch and learning the unwritten rules of the ramp. Take a minute to watch these Quick Tips on the basics put together by Mercury Marine.

Before you can start a day of deep sea fishing, you need to get your boat into the water. Unless you’re lucky enough to live on a river with your own dock, this means backing your boat down the local boat ramp.

Tackling a boat ramp can be a nerve-wracking experience for new and experienced boaters alike. With so many people watching, you don’t want to be that guy who accidentally inconveniences other boaters or looks like a fool. Fortunately, all you need to do is master the basics of boat ramp etiquette to handle any boat ramp like a pro.

Be sure to remember these main elements while at the boat ramp:

  1. Turn off headlights so boaters in adjacent lanes aren’t impacted by your lights as you back down the ramp
  2. Park to the side if you’re not ready to back in. This ensures you won’t block access for others.
  3. If it’s early in the morning or late at night, mount navigation lights before entering water.
  4. Back your boat in using the side lanes, if open. This maximizes space at multi-lane boat ramps.
  5. Use your engine or trolling motor to move your boat to an out-of-way location.
  6. Secure your boat to the shore or dock, then promptly park your vehicle.
  7. Follow all access-specific rules and regulations, comply with state and local laws regarding launch procedures, and comply with all private access rules and fees.

Once your vehicle is parked, head back to your boat and begin your journey. Whether you’re on the water for two hours or ten, it beats any day on dry land!
